Big boy stuff.

People, I have news. My child, at the tender age of 18 months, successfully used the potty three times today. We got him a potty seat a few months ago just to get him used to it, but until today he has never shown any signs of understanding what it is for. This morning he joined me in the bathroom (because what mother gets time alone to pee?), and he wanted to sit on his potty. I decided to strip him because I needed to change him anyway, and to my surprise he sat down and peed! I was shocked and excited and clapped and cheered liberally. He looked pretty happy about his fine work. Without going into details, he had two more successful excreting events this afternoon, which is amazing!

This came out of the blue, and I have no idea if it’s a fluke or he’s a toilet prodigy or what. I’m just going to see how it goes and if he continues to show interest in using the potty, but I’m pretty clueless about how to go about this. Plus, I thought I had at least six months before he would be ready. I do not feel prepared to start thinking about accidents and underwear and public bathroom logistics and whatnot. Plus, once he is potty trained, he is a kid and not really a baby anymore. Am I ready for that? Isn’t it enough that he is walking and talking and disagreeing with me? Once he can use the toilet, he’s practically ready to move out on his own. While I relish watching him grow and learn new things every day, it’s hard to see my baby growing up!

most def a potty prodigy. Thats awesome. I made the mistake of getting a bit to exciting when The Phi (my now 3 year old daughter) went in thte potty for the first time. The clapping and yelling scared the crap out of her and it took a while to get her back on the potty. Totally my bad.

Too funny. I’ll have to keep my celebrations under wraps, although loud noises have never really bothered Falco (because he’s crazy loud on his own).

My 8yo did this at 18 mo. too. Fun! And he is the one that stopped wetting at night and never went back.

However (the part you don’t want to hear) he is also the one that is still having poop issues at 8.

    Ah, the joys. Right?

    Headless Mom,

Thanks for stopping by! Sorry to hear about the poop “issues.” Yipes! That has to be a hard one to deal with.

    Props to allmediocre :)
